When the KV-1 tank was tested in
Winter War, it was noticed that
the gun in KV-1, couldn't
penetrate the bunkers of
Mannerheim Line. Immediately
after this was noticed, the
designers started to build a
tank, that could destroy these
kind of bunkers.
This new tank was based on the
KV-1 tank design. A. Zdanov
supervised the building of this
new heavy tank. The Kirov
factory in Leningrad, build
quickly four tanks and they
participated the battles in
Mannerheim Line, in February
1940. In the first battle, one
of the KV-2 tanks, received 48
hits to it's turret, but none of
them penetrated the armor.
Due to it's huge gun, the turret
was very big. The mass
production of this tank begun
immediately during the Winter
war and ended in the autumn of
1941.
In 1941, there were some KV-2
tanks, in the front were the
German armed forces were
attacking. Also the Finnish
troops encountered one of these
tanks, in the direction of
Salla, which they destroyed,
using an explosive that weighted
60 kilograms.
The KV-2 was armed either with a
152 mm gun or with 122 mm gun,
but the most common tank version
was with the 152 mm gun. |
